Historien finder sted i Wien omkring århundredeskiftet (altså i 1900), hvor den østrigske befolkning går og taler engelsk med en let accent til hinanden, så vi både kan forstå hvad de siger, og få det faktum med at de er et eksotisk sted i udlandet. Her har tryllekunstneren med pseudonymet Eisenheim (Edward Norton, American History X, Fight Club) midlertidigt slået sig ned for at vise overklassen sit overnaturlige show, som trækker fulde huse hver aften og skovler penge ind.
Eisenheim kommer fra ganske fattige kår, og da han som ung knægt
blev kærester med en aristokratisk pige, blev han bandlyst fra sin hjemstavn.
Efter en lang pilgrimsrejse har han så fået lært en masse
magi fra alle verdenshjørner, som han så bruger i sit show, hvor
han tryllebinder sit publikum med fantastiske numre. Det er der såmænd
ikke noget usædvanligt i, da man jo hverken havde radio eller fjernsyn
dengang, så bylivet var kraftigt domineret af live-optrædender.
Efterhånden som rygtet spreder sig igennem hele det Østrig-Ungarnske
kejserdømme om Eisenheims fantastiske kunster, så vælger
selveste kronprins Leopold (Rufus Sewell, Tristan + Isolde, Dark City) at tage
ind med sit følge og se showet. Under netop dét show møder
Eisenheim igen sin barndomskæreste Sophie von Teschen (Jessica Biel, kendt
fra bl.a. Texas Chainsaw Massacre-remaket og tv-serien 7th Heaven), men hun
er uheldigvis blevet trolovet til kronprisen i mellemtiden, hvilket gør
deres spirende kærlighed umulig.

Edward Norton skal spille hovedrollen i instruktør Neil Burger's The Illusionist, en filmatisering af Steven Millhauser's korte historie "Eisenheim the Illusionist."
I filmen, som starter dens optagelser til april i Prag, spiller Norton en tryllekunstner ved århundredskiftet i Wien, der bliver forelsket i en kvinde som ligger langt over ham, på den sociale rangliste.
Da hun bliver forlovet med en prins, bruger tryllekunstneren hans særlige evner til at få hende tilbage, samtidig med at han underminere stabilitet af kongehuset i Wien. Blandt Norton's kommende projekter er den uafhængige film Down in the Valley, med unge Evan Rachel Wood.

Norton plays a mysterious stage magician, Eisenheim, who bends nature's laws to his will in front of awestruck crowds. Giamatti co-stars as Vienna's shrewd Chief Inspector Uhl, a man committed to uphold the law and for whom magic holds no place in his ordered world. Jessica Biel (Elizabethtown) shares the screen as the beautiful and enigmatic Sophie von Teschen, who finds her future inexorably altered when she encounters the man called Eisenheim, and Eisenheim comes dangerously close to unlocking the dark secret of the monarchy that she holds.
When Eisenheim begins to perform his astounding illusions in Vienna, word quickly spreads of his otherworldly powers...even reaching the ears of one of Europe's most powerful and pragmatic men, Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell, Dark City). Certain that the illusionist is nothing more than an accomplished fraud, Leopold attends one of Eisenheim's shows, convinced that he can debunk him during the performance. But when the Prince's beautiful fiancé and companion, Sophie von Teschen, assists the magician onstage, Eisenheim and Sophie recognize each other from their childhoods-and a dormant love affair is rekindled. With Eisenheim and Leopold vying for Sophie's affection, it quickly becomes apparent that both will go to any length to claim and keep her love.
As the clandestine romance continues, Uhl is charged by Leopold to intensify his efforts to expose Eisenheim, even while the magician gains a devoted and vocal public following. With Uhl doggedly searching for the reasons and the man behind the trickery, Eisenheim prepares to execute his greatest illusion yet.
